Enye Small (ñ) and Enye Big (Ñ) — Which One Do You Need?

Enye small (ñ) is the lowercase form. Use it inside words: mañana, niño, España, señor. Most of the time, this is the one you need.

Enye big (Ñ) is the capital form — also called the capital enye or big letter enye. Use it at the start of a sentence or a proper name: Ñoño, Ñuñoa, or Ñ in an acronym.

Enye Pronunciation — How Ñ Sounds

Ñ is a letter of its own, called eñe in Spanish. It sounds like the ny in canyon or onion — one single sound, not n plus y.

The tilde on top is not decoration — removing it changes the meaning: año (year) vs ano (anus), caña (sugar cane) vs cana (grey hair).

What Is the Enye Letter?

The enye began in medieval Spanish handwriting: scribes saved space by writing a small n above another n, and over time that mark became the tilde we see today. It is a separate letter in both the Spanish and Filipino alphabets.

Keyboards sold in the Philippines and most English-speaking countries use the US layout built for 26 letters, so Ñ and ñ are not printed on the keys — which is why this copy tool exists.
